Tragedy of You

8-8-09 @ 10 pm
Rarig Thrust Theater

Joseph Scrimshaw is one talented man. Utilizing the Shakespearean formula, the paper mad lib game, and improvisation, he is able to spin a tale based off of an audience member's life. And he spins the whole tale himself with just a musical accompanist for interludes. While entertaining, I felt myself bored in Act IV (go figure) and while this show was a cool party trick and takes a ton of talent, I felt the gimmick didn't hold up for me personally. 3 out of 5.

Sideways Stories from Wayside School

8-8-09 @ 8:30 pm
Rarig: Thrust Theater

Four Humors has done it again! Courtney McLean was the perfect Ms. Jewls. The double casting was brilliant. The utilization of stage magic and characterization of the classmates was worth every mouthwatering apple bite! Great for kids and adults alike and mad kudos to Four Humors for expanding their audience. 5 out of 5.

The Curse of Yig

8-8-09 @ 7 pm
Mixed Blood Theater

Felt more like a book on tape than a theatrical presentation, but Lovecraft and Bishop's story still frightened me. You don't see many horror or suspense shows in the fringe so this was something delightfully different, however pedantic. 3 out of 5.

The Finkles' Theater Show

8-8-09 @ 5:30 pm
Rarig: Xperimental Theatre

Rachael and Ryan have absorbed other personas in their blood as the Finkles and I'm certain with pleasure that this is not the last time we see mishaps from Wanda and Carl. The ending was a special time for me although the center dragged (intentionally). 4 out of 5.

Blue Ribbon Burlesque

8-8-09 @ 4pm
Rarig Proscenium

With a live band and three-part harmony, this Minneapolis staple was bad ass Burlesque at it's finest. Kudos to Lili's Burlesque to jump in the fringe and widen their audience. If you haven't seen these ladies with pasties and pizzazz, make sure you get out and see them at the BLB. I rate it 4 out of 5.

AfterLife

8-8-09 @ 2:30pm
Intermedia Arts

Akin to Cunningham's 'The Hours', AfterLife is one stellar hour of theatre. Simmons' acting is impeccable, her timing brilliant, and the three stories well-crafted. I rate it a 5 out of 5.

Grrl!

8-8-09 @ 1pm
Augsburg Mainstage

Despite wardrobe and prop malfunctions, Heidi Arneson presents a poetically witty piece topical and poigniant to today. Her gritty voice and energetic character portrayals were very entertaining. Great writing too amidst this charming performer. 4 out of 5.

Tragedy of You

Tragedy of You at Rarig Thrust August 8th at 10pm
i thought this one man show was rather interesting. this show was kind of like improv; they pick a person from the audiance and write up a story to go with their life. this was interesting! then he uses the shell of the story to put it all together. i thouguht it was a funny story and the actor is tallented and funny! it was entertaining and interesting! it was creative.

Sideways Stories Rarig Thrust August 8th 830pm
The place was packed last show and everyone and their mother wanted to see it. although i really prefer Nick Ryan oridgionals this troupe went with a crafted story already published. this story follows the children on the 30th floor and the books of wayside school well. however it is a childrens story and hard to keep audlt attention. i also didnt think it was an overly fantastic show that i would recommend. i was let down.

Curse of Yig

Curse of Yig at Mixed Blood Theater August 8th at 7pm
I thought that this play was great in content but needed working on. If this was taken from a novel then learn how to write a script for a play because this was not written as such. the actors had blocks of monologues that tend to get old and the audiance looses interest. there were only two actors within this show i thought that there could have been more in order to help this show along. the story was great but the way it was told did not support the story and therefore failed to meet its intent.

Finkles Show

Finkles Show August 8th at Rarig X 530pm
this show is about two nerds and a dream. they create a show that is funny and entertaining with stage hand parts and funny dancing. the show tends to be more silly and "dumb humor" then something that is refined and well written. however if that is the purpose then i guess they win. it lasted a little long.

After Life

After Life at Intermedia Arts August 8th at 230pm
One woman show. This show was divieded into 3 pieces. They were mostly well crafted. The end did tend to drag a bit. The first character seemed to be well crafted and the best out of the three. i thought the last character could have had a different approach to her. but it was interesting.

It was refershing to see an older actress on the stage. this one woman show was funny and silly and revieling. plastic and humor and what the world might become it was interesting to take a journey into her past and learn about her accomplishments and follies. this show was funny and well crafted.

Sure to Cure

Sure to Cure at the Playwright Center August 6th at 530pm
I was thinking that i was going to see the show The night i had dinner with Andrew whatever, but this show was replaced with it. this show is about nothing. this show didnt have a plot or really even a reason to be on. it was a terrible show really. it wasnt even crafted. this show a one woman show about ills wasnt even interesting and drug on and on and on. at one point she made the audiance uncomfortable by asking for money. like a begger. like she is the only one who needs money in this world. how terrible is that? it sucked as a show.
i give it 0

Hardy Boys in the Case of the Limping Platapus

Hardy Boys in the Case of the Limping Platapus at the Rarig Thrust August 5th at 530pm
This show is great for kids though some of the language wasnt quite geared for children. There were some funny parts as the two stupid boys (which i dont rememeber them being stupid in the books) tried to solve a case. it was more like the young girl ended up figuring it all out in the end. how ironic. it was a little too dumb for adult theater.

Needs, Wants, Desires!

8-6-09 @ 8:30 pm
Augsburg Mainstage

This show was entertaining, but the script seemed to force these three mini-plays together. The actors did a great job especially Renee Werbowski in her three very different roles. The nudity did seem a bit unnecessary as it came out of nowhere, but I am not against nudity. In the "Wants" portion even though the object was never revealed, it was dreadfully obvious to me what the object was inside the box 2 minutes into the scene. I give this piece a 3 out of 5.

The Harty Boys in The Case of the Limping Platypus

8-5-09 @ 5:30pm
Rarig Thrust Theater

This script was comic genious! The work had something for everyone: kids, parents, adults, and children alike. It also did a nice job of disbanding stereotypes against women. This tight premise is a must for anyone taking their children to the fringe and anybody who likes old mystery stories. Chalk full of minneapolis references it's also a neat homage to our city. The acting is superb as well. I give it a 4 out of 5.

The Most Massive Woman Wins

8-4-09 @ 10:00 pm
Rarig Arena Theatre

This extant piece about women and their body image is very important for our society and culture to see. At first I was upset that not all of the women were overweight, but then I realized that it's not so much what we see as an audience member, but that body image is what we feel within ourselves. I was entertained by the piece; however, I wished there could have been more movement. I found myself wondering if the original play is longer and cut down for the fringe. I recommend this to anyone on their fringe journey. 4 out of 5.

You/Provoke/Me!

8-4-07 @ 8:30pm
Rarig Proscenium

This dance piece was aesthetically pleasing and thought provoking. Very sexy and spunky, this group really kept me excited for what was to come in the following hour. There wasn't really a dull moment and each piece was diverse enough that there was something for everyone. A great piece for dance enthusiasts. 4 out of 5.

Murder on the Mighty Mississippi

8-4-09 @ 7:00pm
Rarig Proscenium

A murder mystery gone horribly wrong. Actors didn't know their lines, the pacing was off, and the performance was like something out of 'Waiting for Guffman'. With that said, I laughed at the wrong times and was entertained by things that I don't think were supposed to be funny. The cast put forth an effort in these silly shenanighans that ensued in this who-dunnit-cliche. I rate it a 1 out of 5.

WORD

8-4-09 @ 5:30pm
Rarig Proscenium

This felt like a work in progress. The plot was very loose and jumped from topic to topic. The show does have potential. The cast really knew how to hip hop and if this show would have been a hip hop showcase, the show would have been much more cohesive and entertaining. I rate it a 2 out of 5.

Most nights at 10pm i am ready to call it. The last show is just the last show and i really dont care. but this show was great. i really loved the writing and the concepts that were within the show. it was an amazing show i think there were so many things that i itentified with. it was amazing. it felt good to have a show like this. i really loved it. something that everyone should see. it was a great show about the struggle with woman and their bodies. although there were things that i would have added or subtracted or directed in a different way i still thought this show was great.

The Beatles are always a good thing for dance. There was some oatmeal and trinkles. like when you open a music box. tinkling along on the stage. lost.
then there was a salmon flopping. groaping at her boobs and loosing herself in spotlights. tight pants with no belt. felt like there must have been something more than that.
red blood cells like jesus; like the beatles; lenon and seditives. happy blood cells. pelting down and there isnt much more too it.

This show was worse than community theater and i have seen a load of community theater. wow i dont really know where to start with this show. first of all; dont see it you will go out mad that you wasted an hour of your life and heaven forbid if you poor bastard payed for it. the plot was terrible, the acting was worse, remembering lines and sections of the play are crutial to theater. it wasnt even funny. too boot everyone was sleeping with everyone else. wow! worst show alive! or dead.

WORD

WORD at the Rarig Proscenium August 3rd at 530pm
I really liked this show but i thought that it was more of a work in progress than a finnished product. this show had a little too loose of a story line. it needed more jazz to this show. the singing was good and the dancing was fantastic but the music was too loud and the singing was hard to hear over it. i thought that the story line needed more out of it; there were parts that could have been honed in on ripped out and threaded in. i thought it had potential to be a good show.

Wow this show was cleaver! I loved it. However some have said that seein pulp fiction before this is almost crutial (unless you have it imprinted on your brain) it is hard to know what is going on if you have not seen that movie. but i loved it. the show was cleaver and funny. interesting and well adapted. the speach was a little on the fast side which was hard to understand the rich language i would see it again for the little things that i missed along the way. i liked the show thought it is worth seeing if you are a pulp fiction fan!

This show was good but more of a work in progress. The show was slow and needed more jazz within it. it was slight content and needed better plot like. There were too many scene changes and too many extra parts that it drug the show out and wasnt interesting anymore. one might need a lobotomy after this.

Bard Fiction

8-3-09 @ 10:00pm
Rarig Center: Thrust Theater

One word of caution. If you have never seen the film 'Pulp Fiction', you will be lost. If you have seen it or remember it, this play will really tickle your fancy. The script was very excellent in it's Shakespearean verbage; however, I didn't feel that the characters were quirky in a Tarantino style. The acting is very realistic and I was impressed by the blocking in the Rarig Thrust. I rate this piece a 3 out of 5.

The Gayer Show

8-3-09 @ 8:30 pm
Mixed Blood Theater

The two storytellers were a nice contrast: Dan Bernitt's gentle voice and poetic imagery was a nice juxtaposition with Les Kurkendaal's poppy, energetic stories. If you are a fan of movement or plays instead of spoken word, I do not recommend; however, if you are able to sit back, relax, and delve into the lives of characters and let yourself be taken on an imaginative ride then this is a must see! I really appreciated the time span of the two characters, how their stories related to one another, and the journey that each of them experienced. I rate this show a 4 out of 5.

Animal Cracker Genocide

8-3-09 @ 7:00pm
Augsburg Mainstage

Gentle Ben's comedy flows sweetly. This stand-up act is witty and has some great gimmicks. He's a natural on stage and the build up to the end was entertaining. There were no dull moments. Highly recommended. I rate this a 4 out of 5.

Full Frontal: A tale of love and lobotomies

8-3-09 @ 5:30pm
Rarig Center: Proscenium Theater

Like an old puzzle where some pieces are missing, this show just didn't fit together. The scene changes were too long, the motivations slightly askew, and the pacing seemed to be off. Some of the blocking also seemed a bit awkward for the performers. The premise is very interesting and I'd like to see this piece again when the script has had a few more revisions. I rate it a 2 out of 5.

The William Williams Effect

8-1-09 @ 8:00pm
Southern Theater

This tour de force true crime story is a must see. Riveting script and portrayals of the actors carry the story to its climatic, heart racing end. Kudos to Singer, Salo, and Vaughn for these passionate, rooted to the core representations of real life people. I rate this performance a 5 out of 5.

Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors

8-1-09 @ 7:00pm
Bedlam Parking Lot

Shakespeare in true Bedlam style. The show made great use of space outdoors and elsewhere -with the exception that the stage was too long and the audience had to fight to hear over several jets above. The transitions in this abridged production were ingeneous. I loved the fact that the sets of twins were completely different -we were able to suspend our disbelief as an audience. Even though such a huge space was utilized (I'd be hesitant to say a stage here, more like a Shakespearean ecosystem) the actors added idiosyncracies and made each character their own. I rate this production a 3 out of 5.

Boobs!

8-1-09 @ 5:30pm
Gremlin Theater

This variety show of tittie jargon and song was performed by a couple of spunky gals with great stage presence. If it weren't for the many mediums in which they told their tales, I wouldn't have been as intrigued. The premise worked and the "bitches" were great and comfortable with the audience and their mammeries. I rate this piece a 3 out of 5.

Winnemucca: 3 days in the Belly

8-1-09 @ 4:00 pm
Minneapolis Theater Garage

This adaptation of the whale story is passionate and well-acted. The performers and movement in the piece is superb. However I felt I would have experienced more from this piece if I could have read or recalled the Jonah and the Whale story beforehand. I rate this piece a 3 out of 5.

Casebolt and Smith

8-1-09 @ 2:30 pm
Southern Theater

This dance piece was simple and earnest comedy in its finest. The movements were thought provoking. The spoken word utilized bridged the gap between performer and common folk: as an audience, we are able to experience the mechanics and insight into choreographing dance. Casebolt and Smith pushed the boundaries of dance in many ways in this piece as well as showing us that dance doesn't always need a lot of space. The chemistry between these friends was very powerful. I rate it a 5 out of 5.

Stalled: In an Elevator

8-1-09 @ 1:00pm
Gremlin Theater

This show had a tight premise with a young, talented cast. The plot was delightful and the script was pretty polished. I was very entertained by the blocking inside the claustrophobic elevator. I rate it a 4 out of 5.

Cherry, Cherry, Lemon

7-31-09 @ 10pm
Intermedia Arts

Beautiful, yet verbose poetry scattered this piece. The show is more a collection of stories and monologues than an actual play. There really is no over-arching character journey for either of the leads. At times the portrayals sparkle and at other times are weak, but I feel it is the fault of the weighty words that the actors had to recite. The guitar music was a nice touch and added sweetness to the piece. I was disappointed to see the characters (through dialogue) never really listened to each other much because this is a series of monologues. I rate this one a 2 out of 5.

Best Friends

7-31-09 @ 8:30pm
Bryant Lake Bowl

Although I enjoy satire, I did not like that the butt of the joke was the theatrical craft. Mocking the self-righteous theater practitioner, these old buddy stories lacked interesting flavor to anyone not with these inside jokes. If you are into punching/penis jokes, this show is a must see!
I give it a 1 out of 5.

Full Frontal Improv

7-31-09 @ 7:00 pm
Bryant Lake Bowl

This improv could have been rehearsed beforehand. Actors had energy and were successful in the beginning at rousing the crowd. The premise didn't allow the actors to really improv; the rules of the game weren't restrictive enough to make the show fulfilling. Even the loose cues of improvisation beforehand were forgotten by the performers. The show didn't make it's time frame (only 2 audience members life stories were picked instead of 3). Because the show is personalized by the audience (loosely), you may catch a lucky break with this one. I give it a 2 out of 5.

Aunt Dicey Channels Moms Mabley

7-31-2009 @ 5:30pm
Bryant Lake Bowl

Unconventional, yet a delightful surprise the elderly Aunt Dicey's storytelling proves that the child is within us all -the only thing added with age is intelligence and no less energy. Packed with wit and truth, this show is probably different every time. Be ready for frank, stylized character from a real lady. I give it a 4 out of 5.

Maria

Maria at the Theater Garage August 2nd 10pm
The adaptation of everyones favorite Medea. I really liked how they adapted this to be a mexican/american tragedy with changeing characters and roles. However this play was drug through the ground down down. I thought that Maria needed to build her emotion better it ended up being flat or rather one level the entire time. the chorus didnt work. i thought the chorus needed more of a boost or a role than it had. the whole thing needed to be redone. there was too much repetition and it wasnt working. i thought that it could have been revamped way more. also i was suprized because it was Frank Theater i expected better out of them.

Fantastic show. i want to be friends with this guy. One man, one boner, no mic and a chance to win animal crackers! This stand up comedian is overly tallented. spewing out humor in all directions. this show was beyond fantastic it now wins my top slot for best show ive seen so far! Animal Cracker Genocide was so funny i cut my right arm off just to serve it to mr san del on stage. he is creative he is interesting and dreamy...even if he doesnt like naked juice he is still a winner in my book. this show is worth the bang for your buck! This show started out great. The first part was about a man who is staying in a hotel and he doesnt like the little soaps that the maid is leaving. in stead of ignoring the soaps he sends a complaint out and then it starts the whole thing. the opera was great very funny and very well sung. the second part however was about a woman finding dinosaur bones in her back yard and calling the smith sonian. this piece was intirely too repetitive and way to long. it drug the whole thing into the ground.

I had gotten my ticket but then i didnt really double check to see what the show was. Thinking that it was pinters dumb waiter i was mistaken. This show instead was a black storytelling session. it was interesting and fun. there were a lot of children in the audiance. there were a few different pieces of storys that were told and three total story tellers. it was great. they were tallented people and the stories were great. it did drag on a bit and the children lost interest. one thing i thought they could have done differently was to bring some kids on stage and have them be the animals then they could get into it more.

Winnemucca at The Theater Garage August 1st 4pm
I am stuck on weather i want to not know what this play is about as apposed to knowing it all and spelling it across my lips with a drift. I have to counter check that i was in a small Kwick-E market in 7 corners and my friend and i ran into the two actors who are stars of this show. fantastic chaps! slap and a bath. so i am a tad biased to this show. The show was based or parallelled with the bible story johna and the whale. i have to say that there was set and that was quite refreshing to be within. many of the pieces of the fringe dont have set and it was nice to have a set. the actors were overwhelmingly fantastic! three people and it was butter. the show however was a little hard to grasp even as you wander out of the theater thinking, " i think i know what that was about". for lack of sounding stupid you want to think that you do. i wish there were some snippet of the bible story so that those of us who are "rusty" on that subject can get a jog before the show. in any event it was a great show really go for the acting these out of towners were fantastic!

The first show of the day is most always a good one; due to the pep of the actors and the audiance's love for the theater and production. Although this show was the first it was a great show. The actors were funny and interesting. This show is about being stuck in an elevator with many different characters and events. The actors did a great job each within their own role were interesting and entertaining! The end of the show wrapps up everyones experiance on the stalled elevator, it was cute. I thought this young troupe did a great job today on the show! Keep up the good work this show was a funny show.

Cherry Cherry Lemon July 31st at the Intermedia Arts building at 10pm.
This show was a woven mess of poetry. The rain outside pelted the roof and the man sitting in the corner with an expensive looking guitar played my heart to the floor. the room was perfect. the two women show was perfect. the only thing that i didnt like about this show was the use of pornographic language and gestures. it rather ruened the show. the poetry was so silky and smooth and the characters chissled out of cheese it felt good. but there were some "parts" added that didnt rub me thr right way. in the end it leaves one confused and rather wanting something other than sadness to lull home on.

my notes verbatum from this show. now with my receiding brain tumor i still wish for its loss. This show was one of those inside jokes gone wrong. gentleman an inside joke is just that; dont share it with an audiance we dont think it is funny. Full Frontal Improv July 31st at the Bryant Lake Bowl at 7pm.
The show was packed however i have to say that i was quite disapointed by this show or rather the creaters of this show. You should know better!!! Look up IMPROV in the dictionary again because this show was not improv. The troupe had a lot of energy at the betinning of the show. The pieces seemed a little too rehersed for improv. Their words seems to come a little more naturally. A true imporv show would take suggestions from the audiance and then run with it. Most of what they did were things that were written on cards and then came out as a rehersed blah. The actors are supposed to be blind to the characters they have to play and the situations they have to perform. This show was not true imporv and it disapointed me. Although it was entertainting and funny at times i was let down by the act itself.

The Best Crackhouse in Philly (Crackwhore the Musical)

The Best Crackhouse in Philly (Crackwhore the Musical) at the Southern Theater July 30th 10:00pm
Woah. Dont bring your mother! This show was a tipper for me. The songs were lame but the singing was actually not bad. There were some funny parts and a giant dildo which was also interesting. I am not sure if i should say that i would see this show again but there were very creative parts and funny characters. Tap dancing and dick sucking who could ask for more. A show you must drink before and come with open minds. Thank god it is only and hour!

The Return of LICK

The Return of LICK at the Southern Theater on July 30th at 830pm
The house was packed for this show. Maybe cronies of the four men on stage, however everyone was in the mood for a fantastic show and that is what they got. The four tell a story of breaking apart and then their reformation back together as they come back for Fring Festival 2009. However, one of the members of their show has passed away before this time; there was some part made light of it. Although i wasnt sure weather to like this show or really think it was rather a joke; i sat as the four danced away, pulled people onto stage and removed clothing. Although i am not a cronie im sure that with a few beers or some heavy drugs this show might be funny. In the interest of those who loved the show im not saying it was terrible i thought there might have been some plot added into the terrible dancing and repetive dance moves and an urn being dumped on stage there might be something within this show.

Monster

MONSTER! At the Southern Theater July 30th at 700pm.
This solo show was amazing. The show is yes a little on the confusing side but if you stick with it i think it is worth it. The show is rather dark but what is theater if it isnt a little on the dark side? The show deals with a serial killer or rather a boy who grows up to lose the tight grip on reality. As we journey through the change in personalities it is a fantasic switch that the actor makes. The show was fantasic and well put together. Really grabs the audiance and makes them pay attention to the show. It is a must see show. Although the middle does drag a bit and the part about joe is hard to tie in it is worth seeing it.

Lost and Found

Lost and Found at the Southern Theater July 30th at 530pm.
First and formost i would like to dedicate this to my new friend who ever she is and where ever she may be. The fringe has a great program for the Ultra Pass holders, we are able to "bring" a friend or meet someone there and offer them a free ticket to the fringe festival. I met and talked with a nice older lady about the show.

This show was broken into five parts. This show is good for young and christian audiances not to be viewed by the non believers.
Part 1: somewhere lost in a field some tweens dance to lute and mandolin music. The piece was too renisance festival for me but you dont have to take my word for it. The piece needed a few more smiles, ladies you are on stage what are you frowning for?
Part 2: This was a peaceful piece like floating in the ocean the dancers were a little older and the piece flowed a little faster and better than the first. This piece i enjoyed the most out of the five.
Part 3: The piece was cute bubble gun and rainbows but lacked the stamana of a dance piece. Again tweens dancing who were not able to stick the landings. Also it was way to long for the amount of plot that did happen.
Part 4: This piece was the most creative and experimental of all of the five. Although it was more creative it was hard to tell what the goal of the piece was. Although at the end it was clear that they were just looking for something, this time and space could have been utalized better in order for the audiance to understand.
Part 5: This piece was way too long. And way to christian for my liking. It was hard to tell what the piece was achieving and it was too repetative. This piece needed more diversity within it so that the audiance didnt get board with it.
As a whole i gave this piece a 2

Panda Sandwich & WTF in the Garden of Eden

Panda Sandwich comedy sketch coupled with WTF in the Garden of Eden at the Bedlam theater July 24th at 730pm.
The first show was a comedy sketch with a running carnie theme. The show started out with a bang the first sketch was about Unicorns and it was so fantastic that i thought i might crap my pants. Followed by humor and song i thought this show was going to really blow me out of the water. The rest of the show started to go a little south however there were some good acts within the show. It was a mixed feeling at the end weather i would want to see this show or if i would even want to recommend it. I would rate this show a 2. With possbible points for revision.

The second show was WTF in the Garden of Eden although it was funny there were parts that drug a bit or carried on a little too long. The writting was well i thought the characters are interesting. Steve showed up and that part was great! Also the part in the beginning with eve was awesome too. It tended to linger a little too long or needed more diversity within it. It tended to drag on however. There are funny characters and just plain annoying characters but you can decide that yourselves. This show although it not be fringe bewitching hour will be within the fringe. I will also critique it when i see it in the fringe. I recommend seeing it it is a funny and interesting play. I rate it a 4.
